When this happens, it's usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people, changed who can see it or it's been deleted.0 CommentsComment on Facebook

After winning the 1.20cm Classic Show jumping Final in Coilòg back in September we were both very fortunate to win a week long training bursary at the Army Equitation School. It was a memorable week and we learnt so much from the best riders, coaches and grooms in the country.
We arrived with our horses on Sunday the 11th to allow them to settle in overnight before the busy week ahead and then headed to the Ashling hotel to stay which was kindly organised on behalf of the Irish Pony Club
On day one we were shown the facilities and familiarised with our surroundings by Sgt JP Rogan and then Comdt Sharon Crean gave us a talk on how and when the Army Equitation School was established and what their purpose and aims are. We then had our first lesson which was a flatwork lesson with Comdt Sharon Crean, we were focusing on our flatwork position and how it can influence our horses way of going. We then also had a grid work lesson in the evening. Over the course of the week we also had many lectures on veterinary, travelling, feeding etc given to us by Cpl Robert Duffy who gave us a interesting insight on how the Equitation School looks after its top horses and what standards we should all aim to provide for our own horses.
On day two, 2/Lt Ruairi Clarke who is one of the riding officers gave us a talk about course design and how to set up and ride canter poles/grids. We then had a flatwork lesson with Comdt Geoff Curran, it was such a privilege to be taught by a rider of his calibre and get some tips for our own horses.
On day three, 2/Lt Ruairi Clarke gave us a canter pole demo, he was riding a horse called Bonmahon Beach, it was very interesting to see an experienced horse demonstrating the benefits of pole work. In the afternoon we were brought to Liam Sharpe’s Lisadell Veterinary Hospital and given a tour of the the facilities and where the brilliant team of vets work to help sick and injured horses.
On day four, we met the master farrier, John Boyne who shoes all the horses based at the barracks, he showed us how he shoes each horse to tailor for their individual needs. We then had a flatwork lesson with the boss who is better known as Lt Col Tom Freyne, he really got us thinking about how the use of our seats and weight can affect the horse and improve its balance. We then got to have a go in the big outdoor arena and jump a few fences with Comdt Sharon Crean.
On the final day our family members came down and watched us jump a course of fences that we set up beforehand so we could put into practice and showcase what we had learned over the week.
Overall it was an incredible experience and what we learned was invaluable. We would greatly encourage everyone in the pony club to aim for this training bursary, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and definitely something money cannot buy!
We would like to thank the Irish Pony club for organising this along with all the members of the Army Equitation School who spent their time teaching and helping us throughout the week.
